We have mapped all major cycling routes in Hounslow, based on TfLs popular cycle guides. Routes are colour coded into type, e.g. quiet roads, adjacent to busy roads etc.  You can click on a line to see details of the route.  This should help you plan your journey especially if you are starting to cycle to work or school or even for pleasure rides around the borough.

If you would like to search for a specific location or create a journey visit the full screen version of the map by clicking here.

Would you like to run a bike maintenance session, the following contacts and reosurces can help:

You can use this to advertise around school, remember to fill in the date you're running it in the space provided.

Bike Breakfasts are a great way to kick start cycling in your school and are very easy to run.  You can bid to the STAs for funding through your plan, see the "small grants tab" and if you have JRSOs or school council reps they can help organise the day so that only pupils who cycled get the breakfast!

Some schools have received funding from local supermarkets for their breakfasts - all they did was speak to the Manager.  Most supermarkets have a budget for community work like this so it is worth asking.

Promotion is key - assemblies, newsletter articles, letters to parents and posters will help raise awareness.  We have made some up that you can download:

Many schools have purchased pool bikes and scooters to loan to pupils either for the journey to school or to take part in cycle training.

We may be able to provide match funding for your school, contact us for further information.

Isleworth Town started this in 2010 and have had great success.  See their resources below:

Here is a general disclaimer you can use as a start, we would advise you seek legal advise from the Councils Solicitors to tailor it to your school:

We promote Bike Week during June every year and this year we decided to do something different and booked a BMX show.

Two BMX riders performed tricks and gave a talk promoting cycle safety, healthy living and environmental care. There was coaching after the show for 30 lucky children, chosen by the school, and they had 30-40 minutes of the riders undivided attention (15 children with one rider and 15 with the other)

This year they visited 8 schools in Hounslow during 20- 24th June. Every school they have visited has commented on how much the children have enjoyed the show and especially the coaching and that it has inspired them to start cycling more to school.

A short video from one of their displays with over 500 delighted children watching can be seen here:

We are lucky to have a dedicated Bike it officer from Sustrans working in 6 schools in the borough.

This year he is working intensively with: Southville Juniors, Grove Park, Hounslow Heath Juniors, Our Ldy & St John's and Andrew Ewing. So far he has run assemblies, bike maintenance sessions and is launching the Big Pedal this month: http://thebigpedal.org.uk

The majority of schools in Hounslow have cycle storage, mostly provided by TfL under the Mayors Cycle Scheme.  We have recently added storage just for staff and for Infant schools as scootering is increasing in popularity.

If your school needs cycle or scooter storage please contact us and we can put you on the list for the Mayors cycle scheme which provides storage FREE of charge (deadline 21st October 2011).

We analysed school census data and found that parents who drive their child to school spent a staggering £889 on the school run last year!

burning cash

Whenever we ask children how they would prefer to travel Cycling is always highest followed by walking and scooting - so why not let them?

To calculate how much your school run is costing you see the school travel health check

JOFLI (Journey of Life Bear) is a new initiative we have given to 10 schools.  The aim is to engage with KS1 pupils and encourage them to not only walk but to write about their journey to school.

One school has really taken to JOFLI, and to make sure pupils walked safely with JOFLI the JRSOs made a safety video.  This was presented at our Annual Conference and proved very popular, if you have JOFLI you can make your own video or use the one the JRSOs produced, to view it please press play below:

Secondary Schools are often forgotten about when it comes to promoting walking, but Living Streets have come up with Free Your Feet.

It was trialled in 4 schools in 2010 and was a success, with Hounslow Manor seeing a 15% increase in walking during the summer term. A further 6 schools took part in 2011, with the results to be released shortly.

School Councils are asked to run the scheme, by promoting it and giving out record cards. Pupils are asked to write down how many minutes they walked to and from school each day during one week in the summer term.  Winners are then chosen and awraded gift vouchers.  The aim is to encourage any form of walking - if pupils live to far to walk all they way they can get off the bus a stop earlier to take part.

Longford Community were involved in filming the promotional video that is used Nationwide, check it out and use it in you school if you are planning a similar event:

Ever wondered how many calories you burn on your school run? Ever wondered how much time it would be to walk / cycle. Ever wondered how much money you spend on your journey to school?

Use our school travel health check to work out how much it costs you, your carbon footprint, the calories you would burn if you walk / cycle - you will be surprised!
